6. Depakote (valproic acid)
This medicine is used to cure seizures, bipolar disorders and to treat migraines. According to a study conducted on the effects of medicines on body, 24% of men and 44% of women, who used to take Depakote, gained 11 or more pounds through the period of 1 year.
The drug affects the metabolism and involvement of proteins. Though it is still not known why it target women more than men.
There is another medicine called Lithium, a mood stabilizer, is too linked with weight gain but little less than Depakote.
7. Thorazine (chlorpromazine)
In 1954, the first generation Thorazine was entered in the market, and doctors were already of the view that these antipsychotic can leads to weight gain.
Thorazine combined with Mellaril has antihasramine activities in the body that results in increased appetite and weight gain.
Other drugs like Clozaril and Zyprexa cause more weight gain as compared to above mentioned drugs but they aren’t supposed to be used if you are suffering from schizophrenia because it may have other side effects like motor problems.
